In this Together

You are bidding for those used Tory Burch espadrilles on Poshmark, while simultaneously posting before and after weight loss selfies on Instagram.  You are still bored and decide to check out Etsy to see if you can find a bracelet to go with your bridesmaid gown for your cousin's wedding in two weeks.  You find the perfect mix of turquoise and 80's hot pink to match that gown that you cannot shorten to wear ever again.  Then it hits you, you aren't bored shopping or trying on your new Christmas gifts, you are bored because you are just tired of your job.  Your coveted job that took 10 interviews to get is just not what it used to be.  You don't feel challenged anymore and have no idea what to do next.  So, what should you do?

You could take one of those asinine quizzes on Facebook about what type of career you should have and just laugh from the sheer silliness of your results. After that debacle, you decide you really need to start writing down the pros and cons of your current employment situation.

How to even begin a job search?  I am not going to say it's easy because it's not.  I've been in recruiting for a long time and even I admit, a job search is very hard.

First, ask yourself, is it a matter of boredom or that you've outgrown the work itself?  I know it may seem the same at times, but it's not.  Perhaps if you are bored, you could ask to help on different projects and then show what else you can do.  If you've outgrown the work, then look for a promotion or to work in another area within the company.  You can also look to see if there are any certifications you could get, could launch you into the next level of your career.  If it's both, then it's time to look for a new job.

This market is something we have never seen before due to the pandemic, the great resignation, gig jobs like Door Dash, the inflation and wanting to WFH.  Even in this uncertainty with your workload waning perhaps, now is the perfect time to grow your repertoire and aggregate your skills and knowledge.  You can take online learning at work, for free on LinkedIn and your alma mater for example.

I know all of our mettle’s are being tested so please remember to enjoy your family, friends and hobbies to keep you optimistic.  The holidays aren’t easy for many.  But what follows is a new year filled with a plethora of possibilities and growth.  We made it through the pandemic together.  We can weather another storm collectively after all we are in this together.  Stay safe and much health and happiness in 2023!
