Happy at your job? Great, time to interview.
It's August 2014 and that song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams is slowly leaving radio and tv advertisements, but it is burned on my brain. What does the word "happiness" even mean? Contentment? Utopia? The opposite of depression and therefore not needing Zoloft anymore? It's too nebulous to even ponder really. So, let's think about your happiness with your job for a second. It's rare to do a job you love everyday all day. I remember my wise papa telling me when I was little, "If you find a job you love, do it because it will never feel like work". It stuck with me and I am ahem, happy to share it with you fine people. I've talked about finding what your dream job is and going for it. But we haven't talked about what to do after you find your dream job. Drum roll please....
After you land your dream job, first go out and buy some Dom Perignon and celebrate your tush off, but after a couple of months, the novelty might wear off and reality sets in. And although my papa was on to something, it still is work after all otherwise we would call it leisure.
Most people stop looking to date other people after finding the one. Unless of course, you are Tiger Woods. But should you stop looking when it comes to your career? Absolutely not. If a company still wants to interview you and you have your dream job, go interview. You never know who you might meet or if you might even hire the person interviewing you to join your team. This interview algorithm yields infinite possibilities. It's usually when you are the happiest at a job when you interview the best because you have nothing to lose. You don't need a job so you will be looking at this interview as a fun opportunity to get to know other people in your line of work. When you like what you are doing, you are more confident in your communication style and poster. What if there is another dream job out there that you didn't know existed or you didn't know you really coveted? Even if you like your job, interview if given the opportunity. You just never know...your dream job could still be out there.
