Why "Office Space" should be mandatory to watch

"Damn It Feels Good to be a Gangsta" reverberates throughout my Brooklyn apartment.  This movie, "Office Space" I am watching is hilarious.  I can't even imagine having a boss like Lumbergh.  I feel bad those software engineers are losing their jobs.  If only, they worked on their individual brands more, then maybe the Bobs wouldn't have fired them.  After all, it's 1999 and there are so many ways to separate yourself from the next person in business.

I jump in my Delorean and boom...it's 2014.  As I arrive, some song,"Happy" is playing and the irony isn't lost on me.  This article is about keeping your job after all.  So, why is "Office Space" a great cautionary tale?

Honestly, it's as easy as copying a "TPS report".  You need to have something about your experience or skills that makes you different.  It could be as plebeian as being a fast typist.  Find a niche.  Period. Anything that makes you more marketable will help save your job when reorganizations happen.  Mike Bolton and Samir didn't have anything that made them stand out.  If perhaps, Mike Bolton, was able to program printers so they never would have any issues, then that would make him more marketable. The key is to showcase your specific skills on social media, your resume, specific projects or by joining employer groups within your organization.  If there is a Bilingual Spanish group at your company and you speak Spanish, join.  If you majored in math and the actuarial department is needing some help, offer your expertise.  Just make sure you are noticed for your special skill.

Humility is key here too.  You need to be appreciative of those who help you along the way in your career especially when it allows you to hone specifics skills.  So take that Italian course on Rosetta Stone or get your Series 24.  Enhance what already is fantastic.  It will get you noticed and stay employed.  Umm yeah... and whatever you do, if your boss asks you to come in on Sunday, make sure you do.
